EARNING YOUR GOOD CITIZEN STRIPES Community Service is no longer limited to candy stripers at the hospitals or bingo callers at the local church. With demand out weighing the resources of many nonprofit organizations the competition for qualified and dedicated volunteers is on the rise. Where do we draw the many volunteers that will be needed? Where and when does community service begin? In a world that caters to immediate self gratification many corporations, colleges, schools and clubs have stepped up their efforts to require community service as an extension of business presence, bringing the text books to life in colleges, instilling pride in all school aged children, and having a club, church or civic organization that is goal oriented. Progressive judgments from courts are allowing non-violent, first time offenders the opportunity to perform community service work in lieu of paying fines or even jail time. By 2011 there will be over 76 million baby boomers retiring who, from recent data will be looking for something to do. We will discuss 5 distinct types of community service that all have the same goals, yet come with different sets of expectations.
